Projects

Empowering the Next Generation of Legislative Leaders

We believe that young voices are crucial in shaping the policies that will define our future. Our mission includes equipping young people with the knowledge and tools they need to actively participate in the legislative process and advocate for meaningful change.

Inserting Youth into the Legislative Process

Through our comprehensive training programs and advocacy efforts, we have successfully introduced numerous young advocates to the intricacies of legislative work. Our initiatives have led to increased youth representation in various legislative committees and public forums, where their perspectives and ideas are making a real impact.

Fellowship Programs

Our Policy & Organizing Fellowship and Summer Junior Policy Fellowship are designed to give high school and college students the opportunity to gain intrinsic skills in climate action and environmental organizing. These programs offer:

  • In-depth Legislative Training: Fellows learn how to read and research bills, understand the operations of the New Jersey State Legislature, and effectively communicate with elected officials.

  • Hands-on Experience: Fellows attend CRAN working meetings, conduct informational interviews with environmental leaders, participate in public hearings, and tour the New Jersey State Capitol.

  • Independent Projects: Each fellow completes an independent project that could range from drafting a bill to creating a multimedia piece on urban forestry and agriculture.

  • Mentorship: Fellows are guided by CRAN supervisors who provide support and feedback throughout the program.

Ciba-Geigy

The Ciba-Geigy Superfund site in Toms River, NJ, has caused significant hazardous chemical pollution, resulting in a cancer cluster within the local community. Despite plans by NJDEP and BASF Corp to transform parts of the site into parks and education centers, these measures fail to adequately address the contamination and compensate affected families.

We are stepping in to support Save Barnegat Bay by expanding its capacity and teaching young people how to fight these issues. CRAN is also working on the legislative side to pass necessary laws and engage the community to ensure their voices are heard. By connecting with local leaders and forming a coalition, CRAN aims to secure comprehensive cleanup, environmental justice, and long-term health for Toms River residents.

Public Comments

As part of our advocacy process, CRAN’s members research and draft public comments on pressing issues, including proposed bills and climate-related conversations. We directly present these comments in the state legislature, city halls, town council meetings, and anywhere else that necessitates holding leaders accountable to the people of New Jersey.
