Saving Black Run

Projects

The Black Run Preserve is a scenic wonder, a haven for wildlife, a water recharge area, and a recreational resource for thousands of people. The Black Run Preserve, located in Evesham Township NJ, is a beautiful representation of the Pine Barrens with its pristine forests and wetlands. Unfortunately, the pristine headwaters forest that sustains the preserve is at risk of being devastated by a proposal to bulldoze 900+ acres of forest in the watershed to be replaced by development.

Fortunately, A solution is available that will protect most of the forest. The Pinelands Commission, the agency that oversees the Pinelands National Reserve, could simply rezone these critical lands as “Pinelands Forest Area” However, the Commission has failed to take action. We are partnering with the Pine Barrens Preservation Alliance to empower young people to fight for the protection of Pinelands forest. Through social media campaigns, presence at Pinelands Commission meetings, local journalism, and coalitions with local political leaders CRAN aims to push leaders to rezone the 900 acre plot of land to strengthen the riparian ecosystem, protect the Pine Barrens, and ensure our water resources.

Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

We believe that young voices are crucial in shaping the policies that will define our future. Our mission includes equipping young people with the knowledge and tools they need to actively participate in the legislative process and advocate for meaningful change.

Inserting Youth into the Legislative Process

Through our comprehensive training programs and advocacy efforts, we have successfully introduced numerous young advocates to the intricacies of legislative work. Our initiatives have led to increased youth representation in various legislative committees and public forums, where their perspectives and ideas are making a real impact.

Fellowship Programs

Our Policy & Organizing Fellowship and Junior Policy Fellowship are designed to give high school and college students the opportunity to gain skills in climate action and political organizing. These programs offer:

  • In-depth Legislative Training: Fellows learn how to read and research bills, understand the operations of the New Jersey State Legislature, and effectively communicate with elected officials.

  • Hands-on Experience: Fellows attend CRAN working meetings, learn how to use organizing technology, participate in public hearings, and tour the New Jersey State Capitol.

  • Independent Projects: Each fellow completes an independent project that could range from drafting a bill to creating a multimedia piece.

  • Mentorship: Fellows are guided by CRAN supervisors who provide support and feedback throughout the program.

Ciba-Geigy

The Ciba-Geigy Superfund site in Toms River, NJ, has caused significant hazardous chemical pollution, resulting in a cancer cluster within the local community. Despite plans by NJDEP and BASF Corp to transform parts of the site into parks and education centers, these measures fail to adequately address the contamination and compensate affected families.

We are stepping in to support Save Barnegat Bay by expanding its capacity and teaching young people how to fight these issues. CRAN is also working on the legislative side to pass necessary laws and engage the community to ensure their voices are heard. By connecting with local leaders and forming a coalition, CRAN aims to secure comprehensive cleanup, environmental justice, and long-term health for Toms River residents.

Public Comments

As part of our advocacy process, CRAN’s members research and draft public comments on pressing issues, including proposed bills and climate-related conversations. We directly present these comments in the state legislature, city halls, town council meetings, and anywhere else that necessitates holding leaders accountable to the people of New Jersey.
